A Confession

Hello. My name is Mark, and I’m an anarchist.

I don’t walk around carrying homemade explosive devices. I don’t have tattoos or body piercings or black leather jewelry or t-shirts emblazoned with profanity. My head is bald, but as a result of my age, gender, and ancestry, not as a political statement. I live in a peaceful working-class neighborhood, grow organic vegetables in my back yard, and ride my bicycle to a respectable job. I have a wife, children, a grandchild, two dogs, and enough debt to keep me tightly yoked to a paycheck for the rest of my life. I am soft spoken, play the mandolin, and tend toward the obsessive-compulsive end of the spectrum when it comes to my ability to tolerate disorder and chaos. In fact, there is very little about me consistent with the media caricature of an anarchist as an unruly, nonconforming, violent, destructive, Molotov-cocktail-lobbing thug in a black ski mask.

Yet, I am most definitely an anarchist. I am an anarchist to the very core of my being.

I don’t just call myself an anarchist as a way of getting attention, generating debate, or sparking controversy, or as a way of expressing my disaffection with a system that has done me wrong. My anarchism is not an intellectual fashion statement or a manifestation of sour grapes. I did not choose to be an anarchist.

I am an anarchist because, just like you, I was born that way.
